During the first two years of Nazi occupation the refugees were not yet treated as prisoners, and they could leave the camp if they obtained travel permits. Over time, refugees from other camps were moved into Westerbork, and by 1941 the camp had a population of 1,100. ![]() Fritz Spanier, chief medical officer, and Arthur Pisk, head of the Ordnungsdienst, which evolved from being a fire brigade to an internal Jewish police force. Kurt Schlesinger was appointed chief of the service branches, Dr. He organized the refugees into work groups and service branches and appointed Jewish internees to head them. On July 16 Captain Jacques Schol of the demobilized Dutch Army Reserves was appointed director of the camp. They were temporarily moved to Leeuwarden during the initial weeks of the occupation before being returned to Westerbork. When the Germans invaded Holland on May 10, 1940, 750 refugees were still living there. Initially 50 barracks were erected to house 1800 refugees. It was constructed on a tract of heath and marshland on the outskirts of the village of Westerbork in the province of Drenthe. The camp was initially established in October 1939 by the Dutch government to house Jewish refugees who had entered the country illegally. On this one it was all about getting the right color for the background, once I found it I just had to apply until everything was covered. How do you know when this painting was finished? Basically it is leaned on a portable network graphic that has been cut in half, duplicated, mirrored and morphed through different filters. I was experimenting with different concepts of repetition at the time and came up with this two headed dog which looked kinda funny to me so I wanted to give it a shot. How did you come up with this painting idea? Is there any story behind the ‘Pablo’ painting?īefore this painting I was strictly rejecting any kind of figuration in my work. How would you define your work in a few words (ideally in 3 words)? I use to compare it to a love relationship, when it starts to feel toxic you should maybe consider to dump it and start from scratch than trying to hold on onto something which is already over. ![]() I also don’t work on one painting longer than a week. For now I just work on one painting at the time because looking at some unfinished work hanging around in the studio stresses me out. I like to mix my paint before starting painting so I can just focus on the action right away. Usually I listen to aggressive music while doing so. But when it comes to painting I like to paint fast, I love the physical aspect of working the color into the surface. When doing my research I prefer a calm environment, in my studio would be too much distraction. The best feeling ever is when I manage to surprise myself, that would be never reachable when planning painting to death. I really don’t claim perfection in my work.
